Clinical practice with contemporary gender diverse youth

Clinicians are increasingly seeing children and adolescents who are gender diverse/gender questioning and are seeking guidance regarding how best to support these clients’ needs. This presentation provides a broad overview of paediatric gender care in the Australian context.
This presentation will cover:
demographics of contemporary cohorts of children and adolescents referred to gender services
diverse pathways to gender dysphoria in child/adolescent populations
assessment and diagnosis of gender dysphoria
evidence base for social transition and gender affirming medical interventions, specific to type of gender diverse young person
WPATH Standards of Care v8 and Australian Standards of Care Guidelines for eligibility of gender affirming interventions
Gillick competence assessment and informed consent
navigating social and gender affirming care in the NSW context, and
competing models of care for youth experiencing gender dysphoria.
James will aim to make this session useful for clinicians who work only incidentally with gender diverse young people, as well as a value-adding session for clinicians who work regularly with these groups.

The format will an informal, lecture-style presentation.

Awareness of diverse experiences of gender dysphoria/gender identity
Understanding of best practice guidelines for gender affirming care
Awareness of available treatment options and their evidence base
This session is designed for those with an intermediate level of knowledge of gender diverse clients – attendees will be assumed to have had some clients from this demographic.
Duration & Format / Training Modalities
This workshop has approx. 60 minutes CPD, and does not include any catering in the ticket price.
Door opens at 6:30pm for a 7pm start.

James Morandini, Dr
Dr James Morandini is a clinical psychologist and associate researcher at The University of Sydney whose clinical and research work focuses on matters related to gender identity and sexuality. He is currently Clinical Lead at The Gender Centre (www.gendercentre.org.au) Psychology Service and founded King Street Psychology Clinic (www.kingstreetpsychologyclinic.com.au) to provide evidence-based psychological services for those who experience gender dysphoria, sexual orientation-related mental health struggles, and sexual disorders.
Dr Morandini has published widely on sexuality/gender in academic journals (https://scholar.google.com.au/citations?user=lJF4kmQAAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao), has lectured on undergraduate and postgraduate psychology programs, and provides clinical supervision on these issues to clinical psychologists and other health professionals in Australia and abroad. He maintains active involvement in clinically relevant research related to matters of gender identity and sexuality. He is the National Convenor of the Psychology of Diverse Bodies, Genders, Sexualities Interest Group of the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
He takes an evidence-based and holistic approach to matters of gender/sexuality, that is respectful and aware of community and societal discourses and stigma, and mindful of the latest scientific and clinical developments in the field.
