CBT-E for Adolescent Eating Disorders: empirical status and practical adaptations

Presenter: Renee Calligeros

Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service

Are you looking to further your knowledge and skill in delivering CBT-E with adolescent clients?

With the steep increase of eating disorder presentations in clinical practice, this 1-hour pub discussion hopes to leave attendees with a theoretical and practical conceptualisation of how CBT-E is adapted for Adolescents.

Family Based Therapy (FBT) is currently the leading empirically supported intervention for adolescents with an eating disorder. However, this modality cannot be used when parents are unavailable or unaccepting of treatment. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Enhanced (CBT-E) is a well established treatment for adult eating disorders. Researchers posit that adult and adolescent eating disorders share the same core psychopathology. This is supported by a growing body of empirical findings which suggest an adapted version of CBT-E for adolescents is as efficacious as FBT. This pub discussion will present a theoretical and empirical rational for the use of CBT-E with adolescents and provide attendees with an understanding of how CBT-E is adapted for adolescents and the role of parents in treatment.

About this event:

The format will be a 1-hour, lecture-style presentation, in an informal setting, followed by approx. 15 min of open Q&A – bring your questions!
