Pub Discussion

Dr Emily O’Leary will be speaking about “Working with Mental Contamination in OCD” in a Pub Discussion format.

‘Mental contamination’ is a relatively new construct which may contribute to the understanding of poor treatment outcomes in OCD patients with washing compulsions. Come to this talk to find out more.

‘Mental contamination’ is described as a sense of internal un-cleanness which can and does usually arise and persist regardless of the presence or absence of external, observable dirt, and can be caused by an association with impurity, immorality, unpleasant memories, and by aversive events such as a sexual assault.

As mental contamination does not respond to ERP like physical contamination fear does, clients with mental contamination are often left labelled as ‘treatment resistant’. It is important to distinguish between the features of both physical and mental contamination, and to differentiate between their unique symptom presentations and treatment.

This presentation discusses the symptoms and treatment of mental contamination in OCD.

A pub discussion is a relaxed opportunity to observe a presentation on an interesting topic related to cognitive behavioural therapy. There are opportunities for the willing to engage in a discussion relating to the topic towards the end of the presentation.

Registration 6:15pm for a 6:30pm start @ The Norman Hotel, 102 Ipswich Road (Enter by Qualtrough St).

Here is a flyer with all of the information.
