Exploring the role of self-compassion in high performance
Presenter: Dr Courtney Walton
University of Melbourne
This talk will outline the value of self-compassion in high performance, including a discussion of how the compassion-focused therapies have been applied with individuals functioning within performance-oriented environments (e.g., elite sport and the performing arts).
Performers, such as athletes and performing artists, function within high pressure competitive and often hostile or critical environments. These individuals can be prone to a range of self-critical cognitions and behaviours which may make them susceptible to mental ill-health and psychological distress. Fostering and nurturing self-compassion is one approach to motivating behaviour and health which may be relevant within training and support settings. Self-compassion has been associated with a range of positive outcomes in the general community, as well as in those functioning in performance spaces, primarily sport.
In this presentation, Courtney will overview recent work in this space, as well as outline why cultivation of self-compassion may be an increasingly valuable method for those functioning within these environments. Theoretical foundations will be provided including discussion of the unique aspects of sport and performance that provide both challenges and opportunities for the compassion-focused therapies.
