Compassion Focused Therapy for Eating Disorders

Presenter: Dr Kiera Buchanan

***SOLD OUT***

Are you interested in working with eating disorders? This pub discussion addresses ways in which you can expand upon current CBT treatment programs by adding CFT components to target core issues associated with eating disorder clients.

People suffering with an eating disorder (ED), or more generally with eating, body image, and weight concerns, have been found to experience high levels of self-criticism, self-directed hostility and shame. Furthermore, these individuals tend to have difficulties generating and activating affiliative and self-soothing emotions. Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) specifically addresses these issues and more specifically, CFT for eating disorders (CFT-E) was designed to incorporate the development and practice of compassion for self and others into standard ED treatment programs to assist with these concerns.

This talk will provide a brief overview of (a) the theoretical rationale for a compassion focused approach in addressing eating, weight, and body-image concerns and (b) explore ideas for implementing a CFT-based intervention for such concerns across the spectrum.

A pub discussion is a relaxed opportunity to observe a presentation on an interesting topic related to cognitive behavioural therapy. There are opportunities for the willing to engage in a discussion relating to the topic towards the end of the presentation.
