Sydney Pub Discussion: Brockman – Schema Therapy
- Rob Brockman
When traditional CBT fails! Schema Therapy as a treatment for chronic Axis 1 problems
Presenter: Dr Rob Brockman
While CBT enjoys strong empirical support across a large range of psychopathology, a significant proportion of patients show poor treatment response. In many cases, this poor response can be argued to occur due to patient characteristics/traits which make them poor candidates for standard CBT protocols. Recent research has confirmed the status of Schema Therapy as an evidence-based treatment for personality disorders using ‘extended schema mode conceptualisations’.
Rob will provide a brief outline of recent advances in the schema mode formulation of chronic axis 1 problems (e.g. eating disorders, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and depression), before demonstrating how within-session mode management strategies can be used to overcome common treatment roadblocks to evidence-based therapy, including detaching, over-analysing and extreme avoidance.
A pub discussion is a relaxed opportunity to observe a presentation on an interesting topic related to cognitive behavioural therapy. There are opportunities for the willing to engage in a discussion relating to the topic towards the end of the presentation.
