Best practices in cognitive and behavioural treatments for OCD - Master Clinician series webinar presented by Professor Martin Antony

OCD is a fascinating condition that often looks very different across individuals. It rarely improves without treatment, and it can be challenging to treat. This Masterclass provides an overview of evidence-based approached to treating OCD. Participants will learn about the theoretical foundations, empirical evidence, and practical application of well-established behavioural approaches (e.g., exposure and response prevention) and cognitive approaches (e.g., experiments, cognitive restructuring), as well as emerging acceptance and mindfulness-based approaches.

Evidence-based treatment of child & adolescent depression and suicide - Master Clinician series webinar from Professor Emeritus Mark A Reinecke

CBT is now accepted as a “standard of care” for depressed youth, and the modular CBT protocol developed for the Treatment of Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS) project is widely respected as among the best. It incorporates a range of evidence-based techniques and strategies clinicians will value. Working with depressed and suicidal youth can be a challenge. This workshop will provide clinicians with an understanding of teen depression as well as tools for treating it.

Cognitive therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder in adults and adolescents - Master Clinician series webinar presented by Professor David M Clark

As CT-SAD has been consistently shown to be more effective than a range of other psychological and pharmacological treatments for SAD, familiarity with its key features is likely to enhance a practitioner’s clinical practice. Effective treatment of social anxiety disorder can completely transform an individual’s life and that of the people that they meet. CT-SAD is highly effective with the outcomes being maintained many years after the end of treatment.

Using CBT Apps in clinical practice - CBT@Home webinar presented by Dr David Bakker

There are many mobile apps available that can enhance CBT with a practitioner, or that use CBT principles in their design. However, it can be difficult to choose from the range of apps. This presentation will focus on some the apps currently available on the app store that can be easily utilised by CBT practitioners. For example, exercise and fitness apps can be used to enhance behavioural activation, mood tracking apps can be used in behavioural experiments and monitoring, and thought recording apps can be used for cognitive restructuring. Please note that some of the apps may have been updated or changed in availability since this recording was made.

Repetitive thinking - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Professor Michelle Moulds

Repetitive thinking is an established maintenance factor in depression and anxiety. This talk will cover current themes in the literature – from the conceptualisation, content and measurement of repetitive thought – and highlight their relevance to clinical practice. This talk will help clinicians identify when their clients are engaging in unhelpful repetitive thinking. It will draw attention to the value of assessing repetitive thinking with transdiagnostic measures in order to capture repetitive thinking irrespective of diagnosis or the presence of comorbidity. This will ensure that self-report responses meaningfully index the severity and frequency of repetitive thinking, monitor fluctuations over the course of therapy sessions, and reflect any pre-post intervention changes. Finally, the talk will encourage clinicians working with clients expectant and new mothers to assess and target repetitive thinking as part of CBT for perinatal anxiety and depression.

Comorbidity in practice: Understanding and addressing co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions - CBT@Home webinar from Dr Erin Kelly

Neglecting substance use in a client’s presenting problems can lead to an incomplete formulation and less effective treatment. Empowering clinicians to consider the role of substance use in mental health conditions is a key aspect of improving treatment outcomes and providing person-centred treatment. Substance use is common among clients presenting with mental health conditions, and can greatly impact mental health symptoms and treatment outcomes, yet substance use is often overlooked in clinical practice. This shortcoming is exacerbated by a lack of guidance for clinicians on best practice for the treatment of comorbid mental health and substance use conditions. While there is a growing evidence base for the integrated treatment of substance use and mental health conditions, there often remains a ‘siloed’ approach to treatment, in which substance use and mental health problems are treated by separate providers. This webinar will provide an overview of comorbidity, as well as recommendations for the assessment and treatment of co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions.

Wide-eyed teens: recognising and treating delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder with bright light therapy - CBT@Home webinar from Dr Cele Richardson

Teens who sleep in are often labelled as “lazy”. It is rarely considered that they might be experiencing a common sleep disorder known as Delayed Sleep Wake Phase Disorder (DSWPD)? In this webinar, you will learn how to assess and treat DSWPD using bright light therapy. Adolescents are at particular risk for experiencing sleep problems, such as Delayed Sleep Wake Phase Disorder (DSWPD). To understand why this is, this talk will summarise developmental changes that occur in sleep homeostasis and circadian timing in adolescence. The “perfect storm” model of adolescent sleep will also be discussed, alongside supporting empirical evidence. Diagnostic criteria for DSWPD will be covered, as well as methods for assessing and diagnosing this common sleep disorder. Clinical practice guidelines support the use of bright light therapy for DSWPD in young people. Attendees will learn how to develop a bright light therapy planner. Finally, evidence of the efficacy of bright light therapy for sleep, daytime functioning, repetitive negative thinking and depressed mood will presented.

The importance of social factors in CBT - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Professor Genevieve Dingle

Please note: this is not a skills workshop. Training in group CBT is often very content driven with little attention paid to the group processes as an active agent in therapy. In this webinar, I describe research that my colleagues and I have conducted to examine the social processes of group CBT and other therapeutic groups and communities.

Social anxiety disorder: recent innovations in treatment and research - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Professor Peter McEvoy

Mental imagery can provide a potent bridge between cognition and emotion. This presentation describes a program of applied research that comprehensively integrates and evaluates imagery-based techniques throughout CBT for social anxiety disorder to optimise cognitive and affective changes. The aim of this presentation is to update knowledge about recent innovations in the treatment and assessment of social anxiety disorder. People will learn about why integrating mental imagery within CBT may be useful, how standard techniques can be modified to recruit the imagery mode, and the impacts on cognitive, behavioural, affective, and psychophysiological outcomes.

Review of treatment for ADHD - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Ms Madeline O’Reilly

Have you noticed more clients wondering about ADHD and whether they may have undiagnosed ADHD? There has been an uptick in understanding ADHD, especially in women. As a result, it is likely we are all needing to be better educated on what this is, how to assess for it, and how to treat and work with adults with ADHD. This webinar should serve to provide an update in the literature around ADHD in adults and some guidance in both the treatment options as well as applying CBT strategies in this population. The presentation will review the assessment of ADHD in adults. It will consider the treatment options and the evidence base for these, along with other considerations when making such recommendations. Recent publications from the ADHD Report edited by Russell Barkley will be the main source of research data. Some understanding around the Executive Function model used to explain and formulate ADHD will be presented.

Treating young people with OCD: using “OCD? Not Me!” in your clinical practice - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Dr Rebecca Anderson

Do you want to treat youth OCD in just 4 sessions? Learn how you can use the free “OCD? Not Me!” program to guide your evidence-based approach to adolescents with OCD and their families. OCD is a mental health disorder that often onsets during adolescence, yet access to evidence-based exposure and response prevention (ERP) is often limited by factors such as geographical location, cost, stigma, and therapist availability and willingness to use ERP. “OCD? Not Me” is the world’s first evidence based, fully automated program for young people with obsessive compulsive symptoms. This presentation will provide a brief overview of youth OCD, highlight the features of the eight-module online treatment program, and provide clinicians with information about how to integrate the program into their everyday clinical work. Outcomes from the program evaluations will also be highlighted, demonstrating the effectiveness of the program to date.

Learning the hard way: lessons from working with troubled youth - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Professor Ross G Menzies

Helping troubled youth requires a broad understanding of the inherent problems of growing up. In this novel presentation, Professor Menzies explores the ‘existential givens’ and the role they play in youth mental health. Young people enter therapy with a range of problems of living. They don’t speak in diagnostic terms, but instead focus on the everyday difficulties that confront them. These difficulties may include isolation, loneliness, anxiety and sadness, guilt and regret, and problems making decisions in a world that offers seemingly endless choice. In contrast, the cognitive-behaviour therapist is trained in the language of conditioning and extinction, avoidance and safety behaviours, behavioural activation and attentional biases. This presentation explores the ideas of the existentialist philosophers as a bridge between suffering youth and technically trained clinicians. The talk seeks to place CBT in the broader context of the most popular philosophic tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries. Finally, the presentation offers a personal reflection on more than three decades of clinical work with troubled youth. Professor Menzies offers advice for the developing clinician centring on the need for warmth, empathy, validation, and the use of creative activities in motivating this population.

Exposure therapy for children and adolescents with anxiety/OCD - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Dr Ella Oar

Exposure therapy is a key therapeutic ingredient in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for child and adolescent anxiety disorders and OCD. Research suggests that a greater “dose” of in-session exposure is associated with stronger treatment outcomes. Yet, despite decades of evidence, exposure therapy remains underutilised in everyday practice, often due to therapist hesitation, family concerns, or misconceptions about its safety and acceptability. This presentation will provide a practical, evidence-based guide to using exposure therapy effectively with children and adolescents. We will review current theoretical models that underpin exposure, debunk common misconceptions, and address barriers that often prevent its use in practice. The session will also demonstrate how to design and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate exposures with the goal of strengthening clinicians’ confidence in planning and conducting exposures that lead to meaningful and lasting change.

Assessing and treating body dysmorphic disorder: a practical CBT approach for clinicians - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Ms Melissa Burgess

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a distressing and debilitating condition that remains under-recognised in clinical settings. Many individuals with BDD experience intense shame and do not disclose their symptoms without specific prompting, making routine assessment essential. Without targeted screening BDD is often missed, which delays access to effective treatment. If BDD can be recognised, CBT is a highly effective treatment that can transform the lives of people dealing with this condition. This webinar equips clinicians with practical tools to identify and assess BDD in diverse clinical presentations. It will outline key diagnostic features, highlight common barriers to disclosure, and present a structured CBT formulation and treatment protocol.

Brief interventions for alcohol & other drug use in young people - CBT@Home webinar presentation by Professor Leanne Hides

"Early interventions for reducing risk of future alcohol related-illnesses/injuries in young people accessing emergency department and rest/recovery services" Young people have the highest rates of substance use and disorders, but they are the least likely to seek help. The efficacy of brief motivational interviewing (MI) interventions for reducing alcohol use and related harm in young people has been demonstrated in a large number of studies. However, series of meta-analyses have indicated the evidence for BMIs in young people is less robust than once thought, and there is significant scope to increase their impact. The efficacy of personality-specific interventions (PIs) for alcohol misuse delivered individually to young people is yet to be determined or compared to MI, despite growing evidence for school-based PIs.
