Ultra-brief treatments: what are they, and do they work?

Presenter: Madelyne Bisby

For some people, just a single session of treatment is enough to notice improvements in their mental health. This presentation will provide a rationale for ultra-brief and single-session treatments, the evidence supporting these types of treatments, and an example of an online ultra-brief treatment for depression and anxiety.

Many clinicians will have noticed that the highest rates of dropout happen after the first session. Internationally, most individuals only attend one session of treatment. This dropout happens for many reasons – while some individuals face barriers to attending ongoing treatment (e.g., finances, juggling life’s commitments), others may have benefited enough from treatment already. There is growing research to suggest that even a single session of treatment can result in meaningful change.

This presentation will present a rationale for ultra-brief treatments with a particular focus on those designed for depression and anxiety. An overview of the evidence supporting the use of ultra-brief treatments for different mental health difficulties will be provided. A newly developed online therapist-guided ultra-brief treatment for depression and anxiety will be used as an illustrative example.
