Ethics unveiled: navigating psychology’s professional terrain
Presenter: Dr Aaron Frost
Benchmark Psychology
Does your heart skip a beat or two every few months when you see that you have received an update email from PsyBA? For many psychologists, the fear of an official complaint is an ever-present companion. While these complaints are statistically rare, they are incredible draining both in terms of time and emotional resources. While complaints remain rare, subpoenas, insurance company requests for information, and third-party opinion letters seem to be endless.
This talk will walk through the realistic risks faced by psychologists as well as provide guidance around good practice approaches to minimise adverse outcomes. At worst, the evening will provide a refresher on ethical principles, at best it may save your registration.
When the complaint comes for a psychologist or their supervisee, it is easy to feel frozen in panic, but there are some very real steps you can and should be taking at this point to help move toward a better outcome. This workshop will look at the formal complaints process and the various roles that psychologists can have within this system, including; complainant, accused, expert evidence, and mandated supervisor.
However, more important than response to complaint is prevention. Despite the best efforts of universities and professional organisations, the leading causes of complaints are depressingly predictable, and in many cases preventable. Aaron will walk through a series of clinical governance issues that are commonly overlooked by psychologists that can vastly improve both the chance of receiving a compliant, but also the chances of successful responding to a complaint.
